—Chris Brass, Saginaw, Mich. The answer appears at the end of the column.

I was in an automobile accident and sustained serious internal injuries.

After blood transfusions, surgery, several days in intensive care and more time getting back on my feet, I was released from the hospital.

My daughter and daughter-in-law (a nurse) said I nearly died twice.

But two of my sons said I was nowhere near death.

How can they have such disparate views of the experience?

—Pat Burnett, Peoria, Ill.As modern medicine saves so many lives routinely, your sons may simply be expressing their awareness of that fact.

You might have been in critical condition at times yet “nowhere near death” because you were in a hospital, and remedies were at hand.

Politics Of Yar’Adua’s Health

Health issue is a sensitive one.

In any case, a person’s health is God given.

Now, God’s prerogative is at the centre of the political space.

As things stand, whatever happens to Yar’Adua will dictate the future political direction of the nation.

To some people, his death will be a good omen.

To others, it connotes evil consequences on the transition.

In other sphere, it is all a propaganda ploy, a smart spin that threatened a very powerful political bloc in the country.

The spin hits right at the heart of the presidency placing the ruling party on the defensive and poisoning the campaigns.

The campaigns had all along been about propaganda mixed with facts of politics.

Having suffered exhaustion at such a crucial time, Yar’Adua’s health gave ammunition to the opposition within and without the PDP.

The spinning hitherto without a conclusive foundation was then empowered, leading to the death scare that gripped the nation for more than seven hours.

Now that the governor is alive, the politicking with his health question has refused to die.

The opposition by spreading the death scare has succeeded in imprinting in the voters’ psyche that the PDP candidate is sick.

Whatever success the spin must have provided, it is hard to see what political gains may accrue to the opposition parties from the incident.

The handling of the crisis by the PDP leadership was a demonstration o...
