Stress hormone can conquer your fears...ba href=/anxiety/a/b levels were measured both by heart rate and, subjectively, by asking them how they felt. The people who had been given a dose of cortisol or cortisone were less anxious than those given the placebo. In the case of the people with arachnophobia, who had several testing sessions, fear levels dropped progressively with each session. In the placebo group, the volunteers who naturally had higher levels of cortisol were less anxious. The researchers conclude that the hormone damps down, rather than causes, the fear response (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, vol 103, p 5585). This is in contrast to most theories that say cortisol triggers stress. "It looks like it does the opposite - that it has a protective effect," says de Quervain, who adds that the finding could lead to new phobia therapies. Royal Free overspend shows incompetence...ba href=/anxiety/a/b among patients and staff and must be corrected.1. When we told staff we would have to cut around 480 posts we said redundancies would be kept to a minimum and at the board meeting, we announced there would be no redundancies. Your report states that we were 'sacking more than 10 per cent' of staff.2. I apparently told staff of the job cuts at 'a secret meeting'. This 'secret' meeting was widely advertised internally and attended by around 100 staff, as was another similarly well attended meeting at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear Hospital.3. Your reporter Marc Mullen writes that there are plans to cut a further 70 beds in addition to the 100 we have announced. This is untrue and he was told this by the press office. Why ask for the facts if he just plans to ignore them? 4. Your report claims that the trust board was 'given a rough ride' at the board meeting. The board fully supported the actions that needed to be taken.5. Our award-winning stroke service is not closing, it has just moved.6. Our consultant staff are clinical experts and very hard working. The trust cannot afford to allow them to undertake all of the non-clinical, professional activities that may have been possible in some cases in the past. It is this matter that we will be discussing over the coming weeks. These are hard enough times for our staff and patients without the local paper creating fear and despondence.ANDREW WAYChief Executive, Royal Free Hospital Wood&Vale Letters » Royal F... 'Pricing system, not merchant margins at root of high steel prices ......ba href=/anxiety/a/b within the merchant sector and, at times, led to conflict. Such unhappiness was demonstrated to the tribunal in a form of a letter from Macsteel to Mittal, regarding the withdrawal of value-added export allowances. The letter read as follows: “I do not need to remind you that we have been down this rocky road previously . . .and have explained the difficulty of running a business when you arbitrarily withdraw the export allowance without six months prior notice”.The letter concluded thus: “The system was designed to reduce import products substituting into the overland value added export market. Previously when the value added system was removed we were compelled to import so as to keep our customer satisfied. Are you implying that you want us to do this yet again? ” Roberts is yet to be cross-examined and his testimony continues on Friday.
