Secret rage has roots in obsessive compulsion

Say you are in your 20s or 30s. You have your whole life ahead of you. You love your work as a teacher; you love your pupils. At least, you used to. For the past two years or so, you have been living a life of quiet desperation. Every day at school, images pop into your mind unbidden, images of unspeakable violence directed at your students. They are so distressing, so opposite to your gentle nature, that you suspect there is something terribly wrong with you, that you might in fact be crazy. You try to will the images away, but they keep coming. Or imagine you are a doctor with a thriving family practice. Since your early 40s you have been bombarded with thoughts of sexually touching your patients. So intense and frequent are these thoughts that you can’t concentrate. You start to spend as little time as possible with your patients, a part of your job you used to love. And your formerly approachable bedside manner... Complex and multi-layered...ba href=/anxiety/a/b and sympathy. In Emmanuelle Bercot's Backstage, Emmanuelle Seigner plays a woman who embraces "difficulty". She has been granted, by virtue of her celebrity status, a licence to be capricious: her character, Lauren, is a singer who's an object of desire for her fans, and a source of frustration for those who work with her. Backstage is a story of fame, identification and power. Lauren, platinum blonde diva, is idolised by Lucie (Isild Le Besco), a teenage girl from the provinces. At the beginning of the film there is a moment that should be a dream come true for Lucie, organised by her star struck mother: Lauren arrives at Lucie's house to sing a song especially for her. It's meant to be a wonderful surprise, and it is supposed to be filmed for broadcast TV. But for Lucie, her idol's unexpected presence is almost too much to bear; as a publicity exercise, it's a disaster. Lucie is not discouraged, however. After this abortive encounter, she's determined to see her idol again, to follow her to Paris and make it work this time. And she does, in unexpected ways. Le Besco brings a powerful mixture of desperation and calculation to Lucie, whose single-mindedness gives her an edge in her negotiations with Lauren and her team of professional minders supporting roles that are deftly sketched. And as Lauren, Seigner is an intriguing mixture of the imperious and the vulnerable. The dynamic between fan and star in Backstage is not straightforward.
