Ex-policewoman allowed to sue state...ba href=/anxiety/a/b and depression and found her incapacitated for
work. She was paid an emergency services superannuation pension until February 2002 and then retired from the force on the grounds of ill health. Judge Frank Dyett yesterday said he accepted that the woman, now a medical receptionist, was continually criticised by the officer. He cleared the way for her to sue for damages for depression and ba href=/anxiety/a/b. The County Court also was told that in the early '80s, at a country police station, the woman worked for another officer who believed women should stay at home. The court was told she described him as an "an old-style police officer". He allegedly told her that, because she had children, "her responsibility lay at home". Subsequently, the court was told, the inspector falsely accused her of having an affair with the local night-security officer, and wives of some of the police officers came to resent her working with their husbands. She was put off work in 1987 due to stress. From the resumption of her duties as a police officer in 1990 until the end of 1996, the plaintiff's performance of her duties was "beyond criticism", the court was told. supportive groups around them," Associate Professor Mitchell
said. Compared with heterosexuals, drug use was higher among gays and lesbians. Professor Mitchell said this was sometimes seen as part of gay culture. But marijuana, tobacco and alcohol were "probably used more for coping". Gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people also suffered more verbal and physical abuse from partners. A third of respondents reported having been in a verbally or physically abusive relationship. In assessing their own health and wellbeing, bisexual women came out worse than any other group. Ms Mitchell said this often showed up in studies and was puzzling. Putting aside these issues, the study found the general health of this part of the community was no different from heterosexual health. The study also revealed frustration with the health system, with same-sex relationships not always recognised. Increased legitimacy and acceptance would be the most important factor in improving the health and wellbeing of gay and lesbian people, the study said. This included better recognition of gay relationships, less discrimination at work and better public education. Health Minister Bronwyn Pike will today release the report with the Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria website. A spokesman for Ms Pike said the Government recognised that the gay and lesbi...
