The 56-year-old former Virginia assistant from the Bronx has had only one losing season in nine at George Mason and has guided the Patriots to the NCAA Tournament three times.

His team nearly upset Maryland in the first round in 2001.

"I've been coaching for 20 years, and I always dreamed of leading a team to the Final Four," Larranaga said.

"But, after awhile, the thought crossed my mind that it simply wasn't going to happen that way for me.

But I'm having more fun than I ever could have imagined." So is his team.

"We're never worried about playing North Carolina, Connecticut or some other big name school because of him," guard Tony Skinn said.

"We're always smiling because he wants us to enjoy every minute of the NCAA Tournament." After beating Connecticut, Larranaga was asked by several reporters if he would be leaving George Mason soon for a Big East or Big Ten job.

The coach responded with his usual playfulness.

"Didn't you hear?

" Larranaga said.

"I am leaving.

I'm going to Indianapolis." He'll surely be coming up with another crazy pregame speech on the ride there.
