He added that none of the people who died of bird flu in Azerbaijan had contracted the disease after eating chicken, as all of the victims had been in contact with migrant birds.

Earlier this month, health officials confirmed that bird flu was the cause of three deaths in Azerbaijan, in the first officially confirmed human fatalities from the virus in the country.

The H5N1 strain was earlier detected on bird populations on the Caspian coast as well as in the country's southern Beylagan district bordering on Iran.

Experts fear the deadly strain may spread among humans, prompting a global pandemic.

Tagiyev said neighboring countries had not reacted to the disease the way the Azerbaijani people did.

For example, broiler factories in Turkey and Russia have not sustained the heavy losses observed in Azerbaijan, while most of the Azerbaijani population has stopped buying chickens.
