- - Pfizer's ba href=/anxiety/a/b drug approved in Europe 29th March 2006 By Staff Writer The European Commission has approved Pfizer's Lyrica for the treatment of generalized ba href=/anxiety/a/b disorder in adults.

Advertisement In the European Union, it is estimated that nearly 12 million patients suffer from generalized ba href=/anxiety/a/b disorder (GAD) on a yearly basis yet only one-third of these patients are properly diagnosed and even fewer received effective treatment.

Lyrica's approval was based on five randomized double-blind clinical trials involving over 2,000 patients.

Data from a combination of five placebo-controlled studies demonstrate that Lyrica provides rapid and sustained efficacy for the treatment of GAD.

As early as the first week of treatment, Lyrica was shown to be significantly effective in providing relief of both emotional symptoms, such as dep...

Arendse saves the day for Pirates

...ba href=/anxiety/a/b that pervaded play for much of the game's 90 minutes, with Arrows adjusting a lot better to the persistent rain and looking the more composed and accomplished team.

"I must congratulate Pirates on their victory," said Arrows coach Khabo Zondo afterwards, "but if they are potential champions, I don't know how good we are." Indeed Arrows outplayed Pirates in the opening half, in particular, and missed three gilt-edged opportunities of opening the score - with Buccaneers goalkeeper Francis Chansa making two breathtaking saves.

And even in the second period, with striker Mabhuti Khanyeza a thorn in the side of the Pirates' defence, it was Arrows who generally looked more likely to score.

Pirates, however, appeared to open the score in the 50th with a deflected piledriver from full-back Lucas Thwala.

But after a great deal of celebrating among the Bucs' players, the goal was disallowed by referee Ace Ncobo for reasons that were not immediately apparent - and Pirates officials, no doubt, will claim a measure of justice was done with the advent of Arendse's lifesaver.

Councils warned of cash pitfalls

...ba href=/anxiety/a/b about child protection, housing quality and recycling targets.

Councils also face bills of £560m to settle equal pay claims from staff, £600m to bring in the single status fairer pay system, and £200m to adapt buildings for disabled access.

"Councils face substantial financial pressures, and they need to take a more strategic approach to the management of resources and risks," the commission concluded.

The report found councils spent around £15bn in 2004-05 – some 30% on education, 20% on housing, and 20% on social work – with around £10bn coming from central government in grants.

In previous years, councils were attacked for building up large reserves while also raising local tax above inflation.

Reserves were unchanged at £1.05bn.

However, for the first time councils provided a detailed breakdown of holdings.

This showed three-quarters of the cash had been earmarked for specific projects and had yet to be drawn down, and only £240m was "unallocated".

This was equivalent to around 2.6% of overall budgets.

"These amounts appear reasonable in light of the financial pressures councils face," the report said.

Reserves varied from under 1% in South Lanarkshire to almost 7% in Moray.

The figures excluded the reserves of £198m and £336m held by Orkney and Shetland respectively, which have been built up from oil-related activities.

Reserves are expected to slump in 2005-06 as councils use them to settle back-dated pay claims arising from discrimination agains...
