So They Say

Conventional wisdom dictates that pop-punk’s a dead end. That more than 10 years as one of the most talked-about, most crowded and most profitable genres in the music biz rendered three-chord pop so recycled, so formulaic and so worn out that there’s nothing left to be done with the genre than let Hot Topic’s pop-cultural bottom feeders pick at its corpse. After spinning So They Say’s first full-length, The Antidote for Irony, it’s hard to say whether or not conventional wisdom holds true. On one hand, with Armor for Sleep and Sunny Day Real Estate influences worn proudly on its sleeve, So They Say won’t ever be accused of making bold strides forward. On the other hand, The Antidote for Irony comes together with just enough zip and energy to make its strong enough to squirm out of most of the accusations of spitting up heartless, generic crap. "I sit down and take deep breaths," he said. "I sit down and don't think of anything and I find my inner peace. " Brickman, 11, a fifth-grader at the Brandeis School in Lawrence, said he was only "a little nervous" yesterday. But his cool as the contest got under way - in between smiling sheepishly for the camera his father Noah pointed at him, Daniel concentrated on his portable PlayStation 2 - was almost too much for his mother Barbara. "He's a little too chill," she said. "He's making me nervous. " As Murali, Daniel and 39 other students prepared for the bee, which began about 4:45 p.m., a faint bell could be heard inside the auditorium at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, as a test to ensure it worked properly. Amy Goldstein, 22, was nervous about her role: ringing the silver bell to be sounded when a competitor misspells a word. Goldstein, a senior majoring in linguistics at Queens College, won the competition in 1998 and tied for fourth place in Washington. "Before, I used to hear the bell and now I'm the one telling the kids to leave the stage," she said. Brock Schmid, 11, of North Babylon, pulled the word "mosaic. " But he spelled it with a Z instead of an S, and he was out. "I heard it wrong, I think," he said. "It's OK, yo...
