Without the benefit of mass communication no TVs or radios back then popular sentiment found expression through the artist's canvas, in early photographs and lithographs such as those by Currier and Ives. Common images of children displayed in "American ABC" explore themes such as the country boy, the ragamuffin, children of bondage, the papoose and what Perry describes as "daughters of liberty" and "the new scholar." "The whole idea of images of children, you're suckered in by big eyes and tousled hair," says Perry, curator of American art for the Cantor Arts Center. "You probably think that there's nothing going on behind the curtain." On the contrary, she says, artists used their chosen medium as a tool to lecture and spread propaganda. Sometimes the message challenged the status quo, but more often it reinforced it. In the section of the show devoted to the country boy, for instance, Perry points out that paintings of independent, empowered and outdoorsy youths symbolized what was perceived as the national character. Scenes of healthy country boys working on farms or at play embodied the well-being of American democracy. Viewers find an example of this idealized young American in John George Brown's 1875 painting, "The Berry Boy." The lone, smiling boy in suspenders and rolled-... CHARLOTTE'S WALK FOR HER MUM...

Internet piracy expert charged in Weston, Redding explosions...ba href=/anxiety/a/b, depression and migraine headaches stemming from a fall that caused head trauma, said Michael Milch, a court-appointed social worker. “There was no homicidal idolation, no suicidal idolation,” Milch said. “There is no history of that. I do believe if the charges were proven there might be reason for counseling.” Forest, dressed in black with glasses, did not speak in court or enter a plea. His attorney, Richard Kascak, argued unsuccessfully for $500,000 bond, saying Forest had no criminal record. Forest also was charged with filing a false report with Weston police claiming that five masked men in a van stopped by his house and fired a gun at him. Most of the explosions occurred at night in isolated areas, but the latest blast in Norwalk occurred during the day in a heavily populated area, authorities said. The explosives involved a mixture of chemicals, Land said. Land said officers found a loaded rifle in Forest’s vehicle and seized numerous other high-powered weapons, thousands of rounds of ammunition and computers from his home. Forest was arrested at his home Friday night after attempting to run from police officers when he was seen driving away from the site of the Weston explosion, police said. A window sticker on Forest’s home warns that it is under complete video surveillance with infrared vision. Forest was one of the Internet’s most notorious pirates of music and movies in the late 1990s, said J.D.
