"We're going to request new policy and procedure and make sure that infirmary is ran in a more effective manner to make sure this doesn't happen again." But will privatizing inmate health care fix the sheriff's problems?

County Judge Gilberto Hinojosa says cost remains the major factor.

"We are significantly lower than anywhere else in the state." Judge Hinojosa says several companies have put in bids to provide health services at the jail.

The price tag?

"Over a half million dollars." That's over county costs.However, the sheriff department's complaints won't fall on deaf ears.

Judge Hinojosa says there are other options.

One could include a full time physician at the jail and new procedures to free up lines of communication.

"I don't think there's any disagreement on that," says Judge Hinojosa.

County Health Administrator Evette Salinas strongly disagrees with the sheriff's claims of inadequacy.She says temporary nurses go through the same orientation process as any other employee in the county and mainly work grave-shift when the workload is normally light.She adds inmate sick calls are answered efficiently and how basic care goes beyond standards.
