Family Community Services is attending the event to determine the community’s interest in bringing mental health programs to the Park, and note which services may be of the highest priority.

“It’s an open forum,” said Fuga.

“We would like to hear what people’s concerns are, and understand what they would like to see here so they don’t have to travel into the city.” Fuga believes the needs in the community are enough to warrant services in Sherwood Park.

Statistics, alone, she notes, suggest 1,600 people in Strathcona County likely suffer from schizophrenia.

While Fuga’s immediate intent is to show the government the need for Sherwood Park-based services, in the future she’d like to see more informal social and recreation programs developed here.

She’d also like to gauge interest in those possibilities at the meeting.

But the main push is to have a show of support for local mental health services.

“We’ve never had this opportunity to do this before,” said Fuga.
