And he can be violent - just ask the former manager he once attacked with a pipe.

But Jeff Feuerzeig, director of "The Devil and Daniel Johnston," which opens Friday, sees something beneath the unlovely surface - rare beauty.

"I really think he's an important artist and is going to be remembered that way," he says.

"I see him as Billie Holiday, as Hank Williams, as Bob Dylan, as John Coltrane." Feuerzeig is in good company.

Since Johnston began pumping out low-fi tapes of his raw, plainspoken songs in the mid-'80s, he's developed a cult following whose ranks include David Bowie and Kurt Cobain, who once called him the "greatest living songwriter." Named best documentary at this year's Sundance festival, "The Devil and Daniel Johnston" probes the psyche of a man whose fervid creativity seems inextricably linked to his mental torment.

It depicts Johnston's upbringing in a Christian fundamentalist family with little use for his artistic aspirations, his rising cult-hero status, subsequent breakdowns and hospital stays - and, throughout, his dogged creation of intensely personal music and art.

Feuerzeig started work on the film after he was galvanized by a rare show at the Knitting Factory.

He spent several years on it, and given his subject's mercurial nature, the journey was not always easy.
