"A lot of the time, people do have mental health challenges," said Alexander, now deputy commissioner of public safety for the state Division of Criminal Justice Services in Albany.

"How do we train our officers to have a better set of skills if the opportunity arises where they could utilize their training to reduce the likelihood of some unfavorable outcome?

" Of the 900-plus calls EDPRT members have handled, few have resulted in the use of force, with only a minor knee scrape to one individual.
