BARK program has a beneficial bite

The Behavior Aggression Reduction in Kids program, or BARK, is a joint operation between the mental health center and the Denver Dumb Friends League.

It concluded its second session Thursday with a graduation ceremony - complete with "Dogtrate" degrees for the therapy patients.

"The program is designed to help these kids hit some of their target goals with behavior, building their confidence and working through aggression issues," said Corey Price, human education manager at the Dumb Friends League.

"They learn to read body language in dogs and hopefully transfer it to people." Three times a week for a month, the group of 11 children ages 7 to 14 worked with dogs at the league's shelter.

Most of the dogs didn't trust humans for various reasons, including abuse and abandonment - similar to situations some of the children have faced.

"Some of these kids have also been traumatized and they don't always trust adults," said Carri King, a day treatment therapist and coordinator for the BARK program.

Students such as Samuels have benefited from BARK at school and at home, said King and Samuels' grandmother, Bev Samuels.

"It seems like he's just come out of his shell," Samuels said.

Davon was referred to the treatment program in January after having problems with truancy and aggressive behavior at his former middle school in Aurora, Bev Samuels said.

Samuels' teachers would call her nearly every day after school with problems, she said.

And what about the detective in Temple Terrace, Fla., who ordered the explicit photos of Lafave taken with her feet bound in stirrups, being dismissed from the force for soliciting hookers and downloading porn?

Meanwhile, her ex-husband appeared on Larry King denying "sexual inadequacies," just to round out the choir of righteousness.

By the way, if this had happened in Nevada, where consent age is 14, there would have been no case, just a babe claiming that "part of the arousal was because it was not allowed." It's a claim, her doctors contend, hinging on impulse control and possibly on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, making it difficult for her to restrain the strongest desire of all.

Still, can it possibly be right for a grown woman to have sex with a child who is, according to his parents, deeply hurt by the experience?

It's a statement that some men looking at pictures of Lafave doubt.

So it must come down to the boy, to the individual's reaction and legality.

What happened was illegal in Florida.

I know men who grew up in Cuba during the 1950s and were taken to bordellos by fathers at 14 as a rite of passage.

But I have never heard of a mother doing that for a daughter.

So it must be a matter of gender.

In court proceedings, he said that he hoped that the story of the platinum-blond teacher and her student would gradually fade away.Lafave - like her former husband, who with his documentary film has become a newly minted expert on sexual abuse - apparently has other ideas.

Calm and composed in an elegant black outfit, she read a statement on the difficulties of life with mood disorders.

She talked about the pains of having her private life dragged through the press.

Then she told reporters that though her real "passion" - teaching - was closed to her now, she had found a new outlet.

She plans to become a television journalist.
