Bipolar Prisoner Dies After Being Subdued

...ba href=/bipolar disorder/a/b died Sunday in the Polk County Jail after being subdued by 10 detention deputies and shocked with an electronic riot shield.

An autopsy performed Monday did not determine a cause of death but did rule out that James Lee Griffin died from a beating or electrocution, said 10th Judicial Circuit Chief Medical Examiner Stephen J.

Nelson.

Griffin, who was 5-foot-11 and 269 pounds, was in handcuffs and shackles when he fell unconscious at a medical station, where he was taken after being restrained and shocked during a struggle, Polk Sheriff Grady Judd said.

At the medical station he again fought with deputies, then fell limp.

He was rolled over, came to and fought with deputies again, Judd said, then went limp a second time, and a nurse checked him and said he was not breathing.

Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Griffin's mother, Gina Slone, said Monday that she thinks the force used by deputies and the shocking caused his death, which happened 38 hours after he was booked into the jail.

Since deputies knew he had a serious medical condition, they should not have used either, she said.

"They know my son has mental problems.

They should have not used that excessive force they used on him" or the electric shock, Slone said.

"What does that do with a person who has a chemical imbalance?

" Slone said that if drugs caused her son's death, it should have happened sooner after being arrested.
