But Grace Jackson, a psychiatrist outside Greenville, N.C., says ADHD medications "are exactly the same chemicals" as popular street drugs known to trigger psychosis.

Jackson belongs to the International Center for the Study of Psychiatry and Psychology, a non-profit organization that argues many psychiatric drugs have never been shown to be safe or effective.

Last month, another FDA advisory panel narrowly voted to recommend adding a "black box" warning on ADHD drug labels about a possible increased risk of cardiovascular problems.

On Wednesday, the pediatrics advisory panel will also discuss Office of Drug Safety data about such problems.

The FDA doesn't have to follow the advice of advisory panels but usually does.!

“Patients who otherwise couldn't function are often able to perform very normal tasks, live more normal lives, with these medications,” she said.

“The reason this issue has become alarming is that these drugs are being used to treat more and more conditions, like dementia or anxiety or, as this recent study found, pediatric populations.” Ader and Bergman have been given a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to further study this group of antipsychotic drugs to help determine the risk factors critical in the development of these complications.

They are also working to identify the mechanisms by which these drugs may cause increased fat mass and damage to pancreatic function.

“We know antipsychotic drugs work on the brain, but when a patient develops obesity or a problem with pancreatic function, is that because the drugs are affecting the fat tissue or the pancreas, or is all of this mediated by some central mechanism of the brain?

,” she asks.
