He also expressed a willingness to enter the TASC program for in-depth supervision of additional counseling.

Edgar County State’s Attorney Matt Sullivan asked why Brewer did not follow Prairie Center’s recommendation for continued out patient treatment at the Human Resources Center.

Brewer replied he has not had the money to continue counseling.

Sullivan also questioned Brewer about a prior instance when TASC arranged inpatient counseling and the defendant refused to go when a TASC representative arrived to transport him to counseling.

“I got intoxicated the night before and took a bottle of pills,” said Brewer.

“I was physically unable to go.” Brewer explained after that incident he checked himself into a detoxification program and went from there to Prairie Center.

“It took me a long time to realize it (substance abuse) was destroying my life,” said Brewer.

“Prairie Center changed my life for the better.” During the argument phase, Sullivan said the state wanted to recognize the strides Brewer has made in the last few months but concerns still existed because of the defendant’s felony history in Edgar and Clark Counties that included parole violations.

Sullivan opted not to seek an extended term sentence and asked the court to send Brewer to prison for two years.

Egger, an assistant professor at Duke University who studied children, ages 2 to 5, selected from a general pediatric clinic.

But about a year ago, she started showing signs of anger and depression.

Egger used the Preschool Age Psychiatric Assessment, a parental interview tool she developed for assessing mental health symptoms and disorders in preschoolers.

Based on criteria for depression set down by psychiatry's definitive Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the DSM-IV, modified for children, she found depression in a small but significant number, about 2 percent of the preschoolers.

That included major depression, mild depressive symptoms and dysthymic disorder, chronic depression.

She found 9 percent suffered from anxiety.

With more kids out of the home and in day-care and preschool settings these days, Egger thinks mental disorders are spotted earlier.
