“These problems are not qualitatively different from those seen in the non-ADHD population,” Steinberg said.

“But they are much more frequent among people with ADHD.” Twenty to 35 percent of people with ADHD have anxiety; 10 to 30 percent of them deal with depression; ba href=/bipolar disorder/a/b is diagnosed in 10 to 20 percent of people with ADHD.

“Each condition must be addressed and mastered,” Steinberg said.

To have a child with ADHD is not an impassable roadblock to success, Steinberg reminded staff Friday.

Some of the traits that can be so challenging in childhood – inattention to detail, distractibility, impulsiveness, hyperactivity, easily bored and hyperfocus – may also serve as the basis of success.

“These children can grow to be creative, good in a crisis, resilient, energetic, enthusiastic people able to think on their feet,” Steinberg said.

“They love challenges, they love to interact with others.” The faces of ADHD do after all include Albert Einstein, Benjamin Franklin, Whoopie Goldberg, Tom Cruise, Mozart and Walt Disney – they all have or had ADHD.

Family Community Services is attending the event to determine the community�s interest in bringing mental health programs to the Park, and note which services may be of the highest priority.

�It�s an open forum,� said Fuga.

�We would like to hear what people�s concerns are, and understand what they would like to see here so they don�t have to travel into the city.� Fuga believes the needs in the community are enough to warrant services in Sherwood Park.

Statistics, alone, she notes, suggest 1,600 people in Strathcona County likely suffer from schizophrenia.

While Fuga�s immediate intent is to show the government the need for Sherwood Park-based services, in the future she�d like to see more informal social and recreation programs developed here.

She�d also like to gauge interest in those possibilities at the meeting.

But the main push is to have a show of support for local mental health services.

�We�ve never had this opportunity to do this before,� said Fuga.
