One can only imagine that the intended victim of this attack may have reached out to parents, friends and even the pastor of the church for help, but even without having all the details prior to the shooting, this traumatic event underscores the need for the faith community to become more aware of its role in addressing the mental health and other specialized needs of those they serve.

This may be especially important in the African American community because we tend to keep our problems to ourselves and therefore suffer in silence.

From a psychological standpoint, both the intended victim and the alleged shooter were in dire need of help, but sometimes, the faith community is not equipped to meet these needs.
