Immigration and White Racism The Ghost of George Wallace

Southern California activists have seen that racist ba href=/dementia/a/b up close, time and again, as we confronted the Minutemen and their allies in an effort to keep things from ever getting this far.

We saw it in the eyes of breakaway Minuteman leader James Chase in the darkness of the southern desert at midnight, he armed with a shotgun; we with nothing but our bare hearts.

We saw it in the eyes of Minuteman supporter Hal Netkin as he slammed his car into a crowd of mostly Chicano protestors as Jim Gilchrist addressed the California Coalition for Immigration Reform.

Gilchrist joined the Coalition, which has been identified as a racist hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Painted as American a hero by the likes of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Gilchrist has been accused by a former campaign volunteer of integrating Nazi activists into his campaign for Congress.

He lost the special election, despite his endorsement by Sensenbrenner ally Tancredo.

But he put fear into Republican politicians-fear that incumbents would face vote draining, immigrant bashing third party candidates in November if they didn't take a hard right line against migrants.

They feared Gilchrist sympathizers like the rightist California group Save Our State, which has regularly drawn organized Nazis to their protests, and which uses the exact rhetoric used by open white nationalists and supremacists-such as calling Mexican culture a "cesspool." Retirement prospects good for Evans

...ba href=/dementia/a/b," he said.

"It can affect your swallowing, sweating, blood pressure." Evans falls into the category known as "young-onset" Parkinson's, Katchen said.

That is because the disease was diagnosed when he was in his 40s.

According to WebMD, the average age the disease is diagnosed is 60.

"However, about 10 percent to 20 percent of those diagnosed with Parkinson's disease are under 50, and about half of those are diagnosed before age 40," according to the Web site.

According to WebMD, in general, younger people have a smoother, longer-term course of the illness.

Young-onset patients also are better candidates for many of the new surgical procedures and medical innovations that are used to treat and reduce the symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

'Queen of Lansing Theater' returns to the BoarsHead stage

...ba href=/dementia/a/b, she believes he's her long-ago ex-husband and he thinks she's his beloved wife.

Carney's delicious script is based upon her own mother's experiences in a similar facility, and it was she, Decker believes, who suggested the actress for the lead role.

Although Decker wasn't thrilled about the daily commute to Ann Arbor, she accepted the role - and treated herself to a hotel room across the street from the theater.

"It wasn't the Grand Hotel," she chuckled, "but it served its purpose." It was a nice experience, Decker said.

"It was exciting to do a new play with a new director in a new theater, and with actors I've never worked with.

I liked the director [Jim Posante]; he's very kind; he's a generous director." But it's the BoarsHead where the Illinois native and four-time Wilde Award nominee is best known.

After earning a master's degree from the University of Iowa, Decker and her sons moved to Lansing where her then-husband found a job in the art department at Michigan State University.

A couple of moves - and several years - later, Decker returned - sans husband.

"I couldn't think of any other place to go." So she began appearing in musicals staged by Lansing Civic Players.

"I did all kinds of things I had no business probably doing," she recalled, but the wives of BoarsHead founders John Peakes and Richard Thomsen spotted her in a production of "Gypsy" - and the rest is history.

Since then, 33 years, three artistic directors and more than 100 productions have passe...
