Crash a reminder of tough choices...ba href=/dementia/a/b. "I could absolutely see my mom doing the same thing." Roger Wenzel of Louisville died Tuesday after causing a crash while driving north in the southbound lanes of I-65 just north of Elizabethtown. Wenzel died at the scene of multiple internal injuries, said Dr. Bill Lee, the Hardin County coroner. Wenzel's wife, Donna, reported him missing when he didn't return home Tuesday afternoon. She declined to be interviewed yesterday. According to reports from Louisville Metro and Kentucky State police, the crash happened about 4:30 p.m., within an hour of Wenzel's wife reporting him missing. State police tried to stop Wenzel, who was driving 70 to 75 mph, but he didn't pull over. His 1998 Toyota Camry hit a 1995 Toyota Camry driven by Olivia Brittain, 22, of Upton, Ky. Brittain was flown to University Hospital. She was listed in fair condition yesterday. During the crash, one of the Camrys became airborne and clipped a Dodge Ram pickup. That driver was not hurt. Wenzel was a retired minister with United Church of Christ, most recently pastoring at Faith United Church of Christ in Middletown. He had three children and eight grandchildren. Alzheimer's alone is not a reason for someone to stop driving, according to the Alzheimer's Association. "Driving is a sense of independence for everyone," said spokeswoman DeeAnna Esslinger. "It's a really fine balance in determining when the person affected with Alzheimer's disease stops driving." For Jaha and her family, it was a hard ... After the advance edition came out last year, I got an eloquent letter from a gentleman who was a Hurricane Katrina refugee and had been given a copy as part of a care package. He wrote to tell me how much the novel had meant to him and his wife. Their elderly mother's ba href=/dementia/a/b had been worsened by their displacement and they related very personally to the novel's depiction of living in the siege. Net yields wealth of elder care info...ba href=/dementia/a/b or Alzheimer's patients, there is an abundance of fact sheets, a newsletter, support groups, medical research updates and more. Go to www.caregiver.org. Over the years, I have consistently relied on the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform's Web site. I recommend it to clients for the excellent description of the Medicaid/Medi-Cal qualification system, nursing home government survey reports, updates on monitoring residential care facilities, and the latest legislative attempts to reform nursing home care. See www.canhr.org. Of all the medical Web sites, I prefer www.mammahealth.com. You just type in one word, say, arthritis, and it searches eight medical Web sites to come up with information on causes, symptoms and recent news. And on the righthand side of the arthritis definition page are super anatomical pictures of a knee joint replacement, hip replacement, rheumatoid arthritis, synovial fluid and hip surgery. The site www.HealthLine.com also searches and compiles information from numerous medical Web sites. Among its offerings are flu updates and a healthy travel channel. Finally, if you are struggling with the ever-changing rules of Medicare and Medicaid/Medi-Cal, don't forget www.medicare.gov, www.medicarerights.org and www.cms.hhs.gov.
