The equipment, which can also be used in research on other diseases, was purchased through the LSUHSC Foundation with a gift from a local woman, Alta Franks, in memory of her husband, John Franks.

LSUHSC spokesman Derek Daniel said Franks did not want to disclose the amount of the gift or be interviewed.

She did release a prepared statement: "I wanted to make this particular gift in loving memory of my husband ...
