QuestionYou haven't opened yet, but you already have two residents signed up.

Are they Hmong?

AnswerNo.

But my tentative third person is.

QuestionCulturally, don't the elderly Hmong typically stay with their families?

AnswerThat's the norm.

But I know families who would let their parent (go to an assisted living facility) because of safety issues.

If they're not home and the (elderly parent) runs away or has ba href=/dementia/a/b.

Otherwise they try to keep their mom and dad at home.

QuestionAny assisted living place is expensive.

It can easily cost $3,000, $4,000 a month.

AnswerThat's about it.

The actual amount is based on an individual care assessment.

There's a report I read that said assisted living is more for those who've saved quite a bit throughout their lives.

But nowadays, there are programs out there.

Some people don't know about the COP (Community Options Program), the county program.

It helps place elderly and it helps everything, all their needs, when your income is at a certain level.

There's a waiting list of two or three years.

I have to get a contract with the county first (before accepting those in COP).

QuestionHave you assembled your staff?

AnswerI have some staff already, some nurses.

There are six (including certified nursing assistants).

They'll be coming with me when I open.

QuestionYou work now part time at the Appleton Medical Center.

Will you continue there in addition to this?

AnswerI haven't de...

Volunteers build scrapbooks, relationships with elderly

...ba href=/dementia/a/b and a slew of other medical problems that are slowly chipping away at his mind and body.

But through the Embracing Elderhood pilot program, which teamed up residents at the home with members of the community, Allen has been able to relive some of his most cherished memories.

“Some people here are able to tell their whole lives chronologically,” said Rick Benner, Allen’s 64-year-old mentee.

“But with Harry Allen, we take little chapters that he loved.” Since September, more than a dozen community volunteers and students from the Miller School of Albemarle have been spending time with seniors at the Cedars, collecting their stories and creating scrapbooks, posters and DVDs about the seniors’ lives.

Benner once asked Allen how their visits and the project had helped him.

“He paused and said, ‘I’m lonely.’” Margaret Thacker, recreation director at the Cedars and one of the trainers for the program, believes the project has reminded the residents of their value and worth.

“The worst plagues of old age are loneliness, boredom and feeling like you don’t have meaning anymore,” Thacker said.

Through the program, seniors such as Betty Franklin were able to pass on bits of advice they had learned during their lives.

Franklin was paired with 25-year-old Jackie Jamison, who recently moved to Charlottesville.

During their friendship, Jamison got married, bought her first house and landed her first ...

SIC social work needs overhaul

...ba href=/dementia/a/b care centre was unfit for purpose, and the Isleshavn care centre, on Yell, had outlived its useful life.

They recommended a single care centre catering for Yell and Unst.

Other recommendations include an urgent recruitment of foster carers, replacing the Eric Gray Centre for people with special needs, and replacing Viewforth, Taing and Edward Thomason Houses with new buildings to cater for 80 people, with provision for the young and chronically sick as well as elderly folk.

To achieve budget savings the group also recommend raising the charge for home care to £7 an hour, increasing the maximum charge for residential care and increasing charges for meals on wheels to £3 a meal.
