Getting ready for the real thing

"Since 9/11, the world we live in has changed drastically," Mayor James E.

Doyle said.

"We've got to be better prepared for emergency situations.

Things have changed and we've got to adjust." CERT is a Homeland Security-sponsored program that trains residents in disaster management, including fire safety, search and rescue, and disaster medical operations, according to the CERT Web site.

The volunteers would also be available to help direct traffic and otherwise help in disaster situations until emergency personnel reached afflicted areas.

"It's a big area, and with just the police, we'd be limited in what we'd be able to search," said Police Chief George L.

Kelley.

"We need the community involvement.

The community would be helping us, and we'd be there helping them." More than 2,000 CERT groups are spread across the country; 28 are registered in Rhode Island.

Many of the CERT participants are members of the local citizen's police academy, including Elizabeth Sousa of Pawtucket.

"We're all volunteers," said Sousa, president of the Pawtucket Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association.

"We're all trained people who can serve as extra hands, extra eyes." The drill started at 8 a.m.

and ended around noon.

During that time, temperatures hovered in the low 30s and the wind whipped through the trees.

Volunteers in bright vests first conducted a search of the area, looking for clues, and then reverted to a line search, in which small groups of...

Doctor to seniors: Work out your brain

...ba href=/dementia/a/b and depression damage the hippocampus.

"Most people think that Alzheimer's disease is the forgetting disease.

In reality, at least in its early stages, it is the disease that robs you of the capacity to learn.

What happens with the naturally occurring stem cells that reside in the center of the brain, around the water pockets in the brain, they migrate up into the hippocampus," Kennedy said.

"If you have a depressive episode and it continues for a long period of time, your hippocampus shrinks.

So what we would hope is to find some way to enhance, augment, improve [or] refine this natural migration of the new neurons into the hippocampus to repair the damage that is done by depression and by ba href=/dementia/a/b," he said.

Re-evaluate antidepressant drugs Einstein scientists are working to understand the mechanism by which enzymes control stem cells' role in regenerating the hippocampus and are working to discover a medication that would stimulate this process, he said.

Kennedy said two reports published last week in the New England Journal of Medicine indicate the first antidepressant medication prescribed to patients is not the right drug about half the time.

The large National Institute of Mental Health-funded study on which the reports are based indicates doctors need to evaluate patients and replace an ineffective first selection with another choice, or supplement the original prescription if it appears somewhat helpful, he said.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Dangerous to Compare Ancient Rome to Current ...

...ba href=/dementia/a/b, never was dictator; nor were his earlier consulships as such remarkable, since he was a lousy politician.

Nor were Sulla and Caesar related - Colleen McCullough's excellent fiction notwithstanding - except that Caesar married Sulla's granddaughter, way after the dictator's death.

The marriage did not last long.

And unlike Caesar, Sulla resigned his dictatorship once he had brought the political house back into order.

Other than that, in my opinion, it is always dangerous to compare the current state of the world to the Roman Republic/Empire, tempting though it may be.
