Sadly, those administrators failed to react and they allowed the teacher's life to continue spiraling downward and students to be taught by someone whose mind was overwhelmed by personal problems. Shame on Stony Brook Principal Joan Barry and Assistant Principal Joe Jette for ignoring the sincere concerns of former teacher Jessica Palkes' co-workers. Superintendent of Schools Stephen Foster is refusing to respond to questions regarding when he first learned of Palkes' drug addiction. Initially, he said he heard nothing until Palkes' arrest in January of this year. But on Tuesday of this week, Foster refused to discuss the issue. According to Pratt, worried staff members first reported their concerns to the school's principal and assistant principal in September 2003, more than two years before Palkes' arr... Jerry Norberg has been named undersheriff. Richard DeRosier has been named narcotics investigator. Ben Goutermont and Mike McGregor have been hired as deputy sheriffs. Norberg, a 20-year veteran of the department, took over the undersheriff position on Feb. 25, when then-Undersheriff Steve Van Kekerix requested to return to patrol duties with the department. DeRosier, an 18-year veteran of the department, will focus exclusively on the drug problem in Lake County. DeRosier is also heading up the North Shore Drug Response Team. This team includes members from the Lake and Cook counties sheriffs’ offices and the Two Harbors and Silver Bay police departments. Peterson stated, "We have our hands full with methamphetamine abuse that has hit our communities. Appointing Richard to narcotics investigates full time is a definite move in the right direction. He is an excellent investigator. We couldn't have made a better choice."
