Thursday's meeting will detail concerns such as the number of local teens who are binge drinking and what types of substance abuse among area youths are the biggest concerns.Underage alcohol use remains the county's number one substance abuse problem. In Chesterfield, 14 percent of eighth graders reported having used alcohol in the last 30 days, and more than 31 percent of 10th graders and 44 percent of high school seniors indicated a high level of use of alcohol. Still, those numbers are lower than what is perceived. When asked how many of their classmates drank alcohol in the last 30 days, more than 60 percent of the 12th graders put the number at 75 percent or more.According to Frith, it's typical for both students and adults to believe substance abuse problems are worse than they are. "In most of the studies like this in the U.S., the perception is worse than what is actually going on," he said. "Now, with this data, we can talk about reality." Frith urged that the community put aside the perception that "everyone is doing it" and that drinking, smoking and experimenting with other risky behaviors are part of growing up. "Once we address that, perhaps we can address the attitude that we can't change.
