Education Initiative on Substance Abuse Coming to Memphis...ba href=/drug abuse/a/b or
opiate dependence problems in a continuing effort to get more physicians,
pharmacists and treatment providers familiar with this new medication-assisted
treatment option. SAMHSA is working in partnership with the Tennessee Department of Health, Bureau of Alcohol and ba href=/drug abuse/a/b Services, and Bureau of Healthcare Facilities, Licensure, and Regulations to convene the "New Paths to Recovery" education forum. According to nationwide data from SAMHSA's 2004 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), an estimated 4.7 percent of the population misused prescription pain relievers in the past year. Further, SAMHSA's Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) found that more than 10 percent of all ba href=/drug abuse/a/b treatment admissions reported in Tennessee during 2004 involved the misuse of opiate drugs and medications. The Memphis community education event will be followed by a buprenorphine training session for interested physicians on April 29. SAMHSA is sponsoring physician-training opportunities in collaboration with four organizations: the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), the American Academy of Osteopathic Addiction Medicine (AAOAM), the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) and the American Psychiatric Association (APA). WHO: Speakers for the event will include: * Mayor A C Wharton, Shelby County * Judge Tim Dwyer, Shelby County Drug Court * Stephanie W. Perry, M.D., Assistant Commissioner of Health, Tennessee Bureau of Alcohol and Drug Services ... Parents must be involved...ba href=/drug abuse/a/b by teens is parental involvement. That's why the turn-out at last week's drug symposium was so disappointing. No parents attended the symposium at which several young people shared their stories about drug use and how oblivious their parents were to their behavior. Certainly, this wasn't a school play. No one was going to cut out the story for their scrapbook. But it took a lot of courage and encouragement for these teenagers to tell their stories. That no one showed up just confirmed what they had to say. The parents whose children use drugs, the ones the symposium was designed to help, don't want to know about it.In some cases they are drug users themselves, or partook during misspent youth. In others they are simply disengaged from their children's lives. In either case, the damage they do through inaction will cost their children dearly. The earlier a child begins using gateway drugs, like marijuana, or alcohol, the more likely that child will find the way to harder drugs. We're not talking smoking a joint or sneaking a shot from the liquor cabinet. Some of these children are intravenous drug users, shooting up methamphetamine before they are old enough to vote.We applaud the organizers of the symposium for pressing forward regardless of the turnout. Their message is too important to be ignored. BACK TOP OF PAGE Privacy Policy RSS Feeds Visit our other news and portal sites.
