The 48-year-old from Fife suffers from severe PMS - pre-menstrual syndrome - and is desperate for a cure.

She has thrown chairs down a staircase and hurled food out her back door as she struggles to cope with her misery.

But now Madeleine has been given hope in the form of a new contraceptive pill which could ease her symptoms as well as cut the risk of breast cancer.

However she will have a long wait as the drug, which apparently works by blocking the hormone progesterone and stopping periods, might not be available until 2011.

Up to 40 per cent of menstruating women suffer symptoms of PMS at some time but about five per cent face severe problems.

Advertisement PMS symptoms can include depression, aggression and mood swings.

Cravings for sweet things and binge eating is also part of the picture but some women will even suffer panic attacks and alcohol abuse as they struggle to cope.

Madeleine is one of the unlucky ones whose life is dominated by extreme behaviour every month.
