IN THE OFFICE: More employers nixing drug tests

...ba href=/drug abuse/a/b, a growing number of employers have become so desperate for workers that they're quietly ditching the drug test, according to staffing and drug-testing companies.

Drug testing nationwide has peaked from a high of 81 percent of employers in 1996 to 62 percent last year, according to the American Management Association.

While testing in white-collar industries has increased slightly in recent years, it has dropped sharply in manufacturing and general services, the association surveys show.

Ignoring drug screening altogether, or hiring employees despite a positive drug test, can open employers to liability, experts said.
