Brunei Delegates At Thailand Anti-Drug Workshop By Fadzillah Kamaluddin Bandar Seri Begawan - As part of a proactive effort to curb the abuse of narcotics, BASMIDA, Brunei Darussalam's anti-drug organisation, recently sent three members of the Maktab Sajns Anti-Drugs Club (AdruMS) to Thailand for the Youth Leaders on Social Development and ba href=/drug abuse/a/b Prevention workshop. The Brunei delegates will be joining other representatives from Asean member countries and China. The March 26-April 1 workshop, which is being held at the Greater Mekhong Lodge in Chiangrai and Bangkok provinces, is organised by the Office of Narcotics Control Board (ONCB). It is a three-year project under the cooperation between the ONCB and Drug Advisory Programme, Colombo Plan Secratariat. Plan Focuses On Affordability, Portability For Working Tennesseans

Saying it is the next step in the future of health care in the Volunteer State, Gov. Phil Bredesen on Monday unveiled a new strategy he called Cover Tennessee to provide affordable and portable health insurance to more than 600,000 uninsured Tennesseans. In a 30-minute speech to a joint session of the Tennessee General Assembly, Bredesen outlined the initiative based on two simple principles: Affordability and portability. At an average monthly cost of about $50 for an individual, and with no high front-end deductibles, the plan is affordable. Meanwhile, it can follow working Tennesseans no matter where they work, making it portable. “When it comes to accessing health care in Tennessee and across our country, lack of affordability keeps too many people on the outside looking in,” the governor said. “Cover Tennessee represents a logical approach for making affordable health insurance available to as many Tennesseans as possible. LAGAWE, Ifugao (28 March) - In furtherance of the government's effort to address heinous crimes caused by the use of illegal drugs, the Department of the Interior and Local Government here has strengthened the Local Anti-ba href=/drug abuse/a/b Councils. According to DILG Provincial Director Gerardo Humiwat, all the anti-ba href=/drug abuse/a/b councils from the provincial down to the barangay level here are in place, but there is a need to strengthen them at the height of the ba href=/drug abuse/a/b issue at the national level. "Although ba href=/drug abuse/a/b is not a big problem in Ifugao, we should not take things for granted," Humiwat said. Humiwat said the Constitution mandates all government agencies to promote the quality of life of the people. Towards this end, Section 16 of the Local Government Code of 1991 provides that Local Government Units shall pursue undertakings to improve public morals and maintain peace and order, among other equally significant concerns. He likewise noted that the marijuana production is not a big issue now however he said that the police force in this area are doing their best to eradicate marijuana in the province. "Unlike before when the PNP is eradicating big plantations of marijuana in some parts of the province, the PNP now is just monitoring affected barangays especially in the municipality of Tinoc known to be the marijuana producing municipality in the past."
