Put into numbers, more than half a person's chance of developing anorexia is genetic.

Cynthia Bulik, a psychiatrist with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the study's lead author, said it's important to recognize that anorexia is partly driven by factors beyond the patient's control.

"We need to stop viewing [this] as a choice," said Bulik.

"Patients feel guilty, providers tell them things like they should just eat, parents are blamed, the insurance companies won't fund treatment because they think it's a choice.

It's held us back for decades." The findings are based on a study of 31,406 Swedish twins.

UNC conducted the research jointly with the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.

The scientists found the ba href=/eating disorder/a/b more common in identical twins, who share the same genes.
