Kat, who has an attention disorder, once spent four hours a night on her assignments. These days, the 15-year-old can complete her work in about half that time. Her salvation, she says, came from exercise. Kat joined a community crew team in September and now works out nearly three hours a day. This week, student Becky Stewart provides a new treatment perspective for an enduring disorder.A marrying of two approaches that have become quite popular in research and practice, narrative therapy and attachment therapy work to move beyond the labels, beyond the individual, and towards a place of understanding, growth, and healing for all involved. Narrative therapy believes that the lives and relationships of people are shaped by the knowledge and stories that families create and engage in to provide meaning, and that we make up ways of living and being to suit these stories. Therefore, learning to separate self from the stories that are judgmental and suppressing, to encouraging individuals to re-author their lives according to new and preferred stories is a goal of therapy. Attachment is the enduring emotional connection, typically between a child and caregivers, but has been expanded to include other key players in a person's life.
