In an effort to promote a healthier body image, Cabarrus Family Medicine will host a jeans fashion show Tuesday as part of this year's National ba href=/eating disorder/a/bs Awareness week. The observance is designed to encourage women to be more comfortable with their body sizes and shapes. The local event is a spinoff from the national "Be Comfortable in Your Genes" campaign. Everyday women with various body types will model the jeans. "How we view ourselves as people and how we view our bodies are intertwined. They are closely linked to self-esteem and how we feel about ourselves," said Cheryl Masters, clinic director of Psychological and Behavioral Health at Cabarrus Family Medicine in Concord. "What we are trying to do is empower women to honor and celebrate the bodies that they were given," Masters said, "and not try to squeeze into the Barbie mold." At least 10 million women and girls are fighting life-and-death battles with ba href=/eating disorder/a/bs such as anorexia or bulimia, according to the National ba href=/eating disorder/a/bs Association. More than half of all women have reported being dissatisfied with their weight, muscle tone and upper and lower torso, Masters said. That dissatisfaction is linked to greater psychological distress such as problems with depression, anxiety and lower self-esteem. Sandy Robertson, 34, of Concord, said she volunteered as a model in the show to encourage women to accept their bodies and strive to be healthy. Bulimia is especially harmful to the teeth.From constant vomiting, the enamel and dentin coverings on the back of the upper front teeth surfaces will erode, explains Dr. Kosinski. The amount of erosion depends on the frequency and degree of vomiting. And when the back teeth are affected there will be a change in the bite from the loss of tooth structure. Another problem common with bulimics is swelling of the parotid gland. Bulimia also can result in having a dry mouth because of dehydration from fasting and vomiting and abuse of laxatives and diuretics.Dr. Kosinski stresses that patients suspected of bulimia should be referred to mental health professionals who are experienced in ba href=/eating disorder/a/bs. “From a dental standpoint, these patients should come in for regular professional cleanings and practice meticulous oral hygiene and home care,” says Dr. Kosinski. “They should rinse vigorously with water immediately after vomiting. The use of ‘artificial saliva’ and daily application of fluoride in custom trays also helps minimize damage to the teeth and gums.
