Cephalon wants to market the drug to children ages 6 to 17 with ADHD. The FDA advisory panel wants Cephalon (NASDAQ: CEPH) of Frazer, Pa., to conduct an additional one-month study to gather more data on a potential side effect: severe skin rashes including a condition known as Stevens Johnson syndrome, a sometimes fatal ailment found in one boy taking the medicine. Cephalon Founder and CEO Frank Baldino, in a conference call with analysts Thursday night, reiterated his position that the company believes Sparlon is safe and beneficial and side effects are rare. He said the company was "extremely disappointed" with the advisory panel's decision. Baldino said company officials will meet with the FDA to determine exactly what additional data the agency wants before committing to conducting any additional studies. Cephalon also lowered its sales estimate for this year by $100 million to between $1.45 billion and $1.5 billion because of the ruling. The Securities and Exchange Commission halted trading in Cephalon stock for the entire day Thursday pending the outcome of the advisory panel meeting. The company's shares, which have bounced around this week, lost $11.25. or 15.4 percent, to trade at $62.06 on INET, from their Nasdaq close at $73.31. But while some analysts downgraded the stock, Lawrence H. Neibor of Baird reiterated an "Outperform," or "Buy" rating on the shares, anticipating a drop in price _ or "severe pressure in the short term" _ he said could benefit investors. "We recommend using this pressure to buy the stock," Neibor said, although he cut his price target to $75 from $83 to reflect the absence of Sparlon sales in 2008. "CEPH will work to bring Sparlon to market in this period but we have little confidence," he added. Subscribe to the paper for less than thirty cents a day!
