It's sometimes hard for children diagnosed with ADHD to control their behavior, and/or pay attention in class.

While there are medications out there to treat ADHD, there can be harsh side effects.

Now a congressional panel is discussing whether the risks outweigh the benefits.

At a contentious FDA panel meeting, all sides weighed in on the risks and the benefits.

Here's what doctors know for sure: the drugs are stimulants, known to increase heart rate and blood pressure.

An estimated 2.5 million children take them.

That number is on the rise.

There have been 19 cases of sudden death in five years among children who were taking ADHD drugs.

Many of those deaths caused by heart failure.

What doctors don't know is how many, if any, of those deaths can be directly blamed on the ADHD drugs.

There's not enough data yet to prove it.

"My view is that we have rampant overuse of the drugs, a failure to respect the potential of the drugs to do harm," said Dr.

Steven Nissen of the Cleveland Clinic.

Cardiologists like Nissen, who first recommended the black box warning, believe it's warranted until more data can provide definitive answers.

"We want the physicians hands to tremble a little bit before they write that prescription," he said.

But specialists like Dr.

Andrew Adesman have seen firsthand how many children have been helped by the drugs.

The group, aged 13 and 14, fell ill at Narangba Valley State High School about lunch time yesterday.

They had ingested Ritalin, a drug used to treat Attention Deficit ba href=/hyperactivity/a/b Disorder (ADHD).

The 10 girls and four boys were rushed to Caboolture Hospital suffering nausea and elevated heart rates, but were later discharged.

A police spokeswoman said police would begin questioning the students today, including the teenage girl who allegedly took the drugs to school and gave them to her friends.
