Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - Just What Kids Need ...

...ba href=/hyperactivity/a/b disorder (ADHD) to fatigue associated with multiple sclerosis and depression," according to the November 1, 2004 Business Week Online.

Cephalon gets nearly half of its $1.2 billion in annual sales from modafinil.

Its original patent ran out in December 2005.

However, in a sweetheart deal, Cephalon agreed to pay 4 generic drug makers, including Mylan Laboratories and Teva Pharmaceutical, over $200 million to postpone marketing generic versions of the medication until October 2011, GoozNews reported on March 17, 2006.

In addition, the Cephalon will get a 6-month extension of that agreement if it wins a pediatric approval for the drug, according to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

With Sparlon's application to FDA approval, Cephalon claimed 3 studies involving more than 600 children aged 6 to 17, found the drug to be more effective than a placebo.

Which says what?

What does it mean to be more effective than a placebo?

The question is, how many trials did it take to get the drug to win out over a placebo three times?

Sparlon was "generally well-tolerated," Cephalon reported.

What does "generally well-tolerated," mean?

A placebo?

One study of 248 patients was published in December 2005 issue of Pediatrics, and said Sparlon's effectiveness and saf...

FDA considering new warnings for ADHD drugs

And now an FDA advisory panel is being asked whether there should be stronger warnings.

Some medical experts are concerned patients may be scared away from these drugs if the warnings are too strong.

But other experts warn lives may be lost if the warnings aren't strong enough.

Jackie Bessner is convinced her daughter's death is connected to the medicine she took, "She loved basketball.

She played baseball.

She was a beautiful young woman and we lost her on October 29 after she took this medication." Five months after their daughter committed suicide, Jackie and Brad Bessner are asking the Food and Drug Administration to issue stronger warnings about the psychiatric side effects of the drugs used to treat attention deficit ba href=/hyperactivity/a/b disorder.

They say 15-year-old Leanne was having trouble concentrating in school, and was prescribed a drug called Concerta.

Bessner says, "She was on medication 2 1/2 months and her grades improved she would have been on the honor roll for the first time in three or four years, and she paid for, with her life last month." The FDA decided some ADHD drugs should carry stronger warnings about cardiovascular risks.

Now an advisory board is considering whether there should be similar warnings about the risk of psychosi...
