In a study of 86 women who were between four and 36 months past their primary treatment, those who were assigned to twice-weekly weight-training sessions had significantly better quality-of-life score and global psychological scores compared with controls, reported Kathryn H. Schmitz, Ph.D., of the University of Pennsylvania and colleagues at the University of Minnesota. Those in the weight-training group were taught how to perform nine common weight-based exercises using free weights and resistance machines to work the muscles of their chest, back, shoulders, arms, buttocks, hips and thighs. "They put in two sessions a week, one hour each time, for six months," said study co-author Dr. Tetsuya Ohira, a visiting scholar in the division of epidemiology and community health at the University of Minnesota. It is easy to blame fast and junk food for our bulging waistlines. But it seems that the electric light bulb could be another key culprit. By artificially extending the 'day', our average hours sleep have dwindled over the last hundred years from ten with one in three of us now getting fewer than seven hours kip a night. Combined with too much television, computing, stress, new babies and crazy work schedules, sleep deprivation is now epidemic and a provocative body of research suggests it is making us fat. Advert: article continues below ∨ Why does sleep make us fat? There are several reasons behind such claims. Firstly sleep deprivation lowers levels of the hormone leptin which triggers over consumption of carbohydrate foods. Anyone who has had a bad night's sleep is familiar with insatiable cravings for toast, cereal and croissant. Secondly lack of sleep cause growth hormone levels to plummet by 75%. Secreted during the deep stage of sleep, growth hormone repairs muscle and helps to maintain the proportion of muscle to fat. Too little could increase our fat stores. Blood sugar is also adversely affected. Having just four to seven hours sleep causes sugar readings to shoot up after breakfast and remain at double their usual value in the morning ahead. In turn this triggers extra insulin which stimulates hunger and encourages fat storage. Scoffing a chocolate bar is thus a natural knee jerk reaction.
