Many pensioners suffer debilitating effects from prescription ......ba href=/insomnia/a/b. The drugs include opioids, anti-psychotics, benzodiazepines, and anticholinergic drugs, which can be very harmful for older patients. Two thirds of old people over the age of 75 who live at home take medicines that affect the central nervous system. Many have several preparations. One in two elderly people who are institutionalised, and one in six who live at home take three or more psychopharmaceuticals, even though two is the recommended maximum. Geriatric specialist Sirpa Hartikainen of the University of Kuopio says that benzodiazepines are being prescribed at record rates. She says that French patients over 75 consume the greatest amount of the drugs, followed immediately by those in Finland. Experts are concerned, because benzodiazepines accumulate in a body whose metabolism has slowed down. Chemicals in a pill taken in the evening can stay in the body a full week. Use should be limited to a few weeks at a time, but it often continues for years. "Long-term use is a great addiction problem", Kivelä points out. ! - - Helsingin Sanomat ! - - 24.3.2006 - TODAY Finnish-fuelled "Lord of the Rings" is magnificent stage spectacle Many pensioners suffer debilitating effects from prescription medicines Contractors for small home repairs hard to find in Helsinki region Report: Working while studying not biggest reason for delayed graduation Ministry of Education is disappointed in Finnish National Opera Finland may send staff of...
