Provigil and Sparlon both contain modafinil, but Sparlon would contain higher doses than the recommended 200-milligram dose of Provigil. FDA reviewers noted Sparlon was not effective for ADHD in the lower dose. Cephalon is counting on Sparlon to add $400 million to $600 million in annual sales to the company, whose revenue last year was $1.2 billion. Cephalon shares have dropped about 6 percent since March 15, when Sparlon was mentioned in a review of 100 separate ADHD trials as increasing the risk of suicidal tendencies compared with a placebo.
