Somaxon Pharma Posts Wider 2005 Loss

Losses grew to $38.6 million, or $33.30 per share, from a loss of $13.6 million, or $38.08 per share, a year earlier.

Treating deferred stock as if it was converted into common shares at the date of issuance, net loss was $4.14 per share, compared with a loss of $3.94 last year.

The company posted no revenue in 2005.

Operating expenses ballooned to $39.9 million, from $13.8 million last year as research and development costs expanded more than threefold to nearly $29 million.

Analysts, on average, were expecting a loss of $2.96 per share on no revenue, according to a poll by Thomson Financial.

The company said as of Dec.

31 it had cash and investments of $104 million and no long term debt.

Shares of Somaxon fell 3 cents to close at $16.48 on the Nasdaq.
