Eat in Order to Sleep

...ba href=/insomnia/a/b, I would suggest taking a melatonin or 5-HTP supplement rather than trying to get it from your diet.

So, how is it that we get so tired after eating a turkey feast?

It is a combination of the large quantities of carbohydrates and amino acids that puts us to sleep.

A high carbohydrate meal stimulates the release of insulin, which helps remove some of the amino acids into muscle cells.

These amino acids normally compete with tryptophan.

This results in an increase in the relative concentration of tryptophan in the blood allowing more of it to enter the brain and make the sleep-inducing chemicals.

Eating a high protein meal without accompanying carbohydrates not only leads to minimal serotonin production, but can also keep you awake, since protein-rich foods also contain the amino acid, tyrosine, which can perk up the brain.

Also, the fat in the turkey meal and overeating can slow down the digestive system, requiring larger blood flow to the digestive tract which then decreases blood flow to other areas such as the brain, making you feel lethargic.

Statement Responding to Recent Media Reports Regarding Appropriate ...

Recent anecdotal reports in the media have focused on rare occurrences of sleepwalking and sleep-related eating in patients who may also be taking AMBIEN.

The safety profile of AMBIEN is well established and reported in the AMBIEN Prescribing Information approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

After recently conducting a thorough analysis sanofi-aventis has not observed any significant change in that safety profile of AMBIEN.

The information currently contained in the US Prescribing Information remains accurate: somnambulism is a possible rare adverse event.

One source estimates the incidence of sleepwalking in the general adult population is approximately 4%.

Further, patients who experience sleep disorders have been shown to have an increased propensity of sleepwalking and sleep-related eating disorders.

Thus, while events of sleepwalking have occurred during treatment with AMBIEN, these instances cannot be systematically linked to the product.

Since the introduction of AMBIEN in the US in 1993, and throughout the 14 billion nights of therapy worldwide provided by zolpidem, the active ingredient of AMBIEN, patient safety has been and will continue to be of paramount importance to sanofi-aventis.

As with all of our products, sanofi-aventis continues to closely monitor the safety profile of AMBIEN and we regularly communicate with Health Authorities as part of regular post-marketing safety evaluation of our products.

It is important that AMBIEN o...

Lack of a good night's sleep is a nightmare

...ba href=/insomnia/a/b, abruptly waking up, night sweats, rapid heartbeats during sleep and snoring.

But public awareness of the disorders, and of related medical services and intervention measures, is low, said Wang Guangliang, secretary general of the Chinese Sleep Research Society.

Wang said the most important thing for experts at the moment is to let people know of the help available.

For example, many regard snoring as a sign of sound sleep.

It may, however, be a symptom of a potentially serious breathing condition sleep apnea that can lead to heart disease and strokes.

This year, his society will hold at least 1,000 lectures and forums in communities to teach residents how to improve their quality of sleep.

Sleep disorders may be caused by mental pressure or physical illness, and must be treated under the guidance of doctors, Wang said.

However, the majority of Chinese hospitals have no special departments to treat sleep problems.

Doctors who can treat disorders often work in separate departments, and there are no general practitioners to help people, Wang added.

It can leave patients feeling confused about which department they should go to, so, instead, they end up selecting remedies such as sleeping pills by themselves.

In the past several years, Wang's society has established sleep centres in six hospitals in Wenzhou, East China's Zhejiang Province, Luoyang, Central China's Henan Province, and other regions.

More hospitals need to establish such centres to...
