Desmond Sheridan, who is now 52 years of age and from North Donegal, suffered post-traumatic stress after discovering the bodies of a young Garda and soldier in Derrada Wood near Ballinamore in Leitrim in December 1983.

Their deaths followed a shoot-out with the kidnappers of supermarket boss, Don Tidey.

Justice Eamon de Valera accepted that the incident added to an earlier shooting incident at the border in 1979 had caused Garda Sheridan psychiatric problems which continued to adversely affect him.

Garda Sheridan said he had suffered panic attacks in 1995 which were triggered by fireworks.

He attended a psychiatrist and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.

He said he had swept it under the carpet partly because of the macho culture within the Garda Siochana.
