Results | Story Bipolar pill manufacturer on trial in Calgary By JUDY MONCHUK CALGARY (CP) - An Alberta company that markets nutritional supplements to treat mental illness says Health Canada's aversion to alternative health products is at the heart of a prosecution which begins Monday in a Calgary court.

"This is really about bankrupting our company and trying to put us out of business," said Tony Stephan, CEO of TrueHope Nutritional Support, adding that his company has amassed $300,000 in legal bills battling Health Canada.

"We're not hucksters." Three weeks have been set aside in provincial court to determine if TrueHope sold its supplement - a blend of 36 minerals, vitamins and antioxidants which are found in ordinary food products - without a proper drug number in 2003.

The charge carries a maximum $500 fine.

A slightly altered version of TrueHope's supplement has been approved by Health Canada's natural health products division since 2004, when legislation governing such products changed.

The pills were developed after Stephan's search for help when his first wife committed suicide in 1...
