Article Date: 22 Feb 2006 - 1:00am (UK)The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has today issued guidance to the NHS in England and Wales recommending two computerised cognitive behavioural therapy (CCBT) packages, widening the available options for treating people with depression and anxiety. This guidance updates previous NICE technology appraisal guidance No51 from October 2002 and concerns five specific packages for the delivery of computerised cognitive behaviour therapy, accessed via a referral from a general practitioner (GP): three for depression (Beating the Blues, COPE and Overcoming Depression), one for panic/phobia (FearFighter) and one for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) (OCFighter, previously known as BTSteps). Dirty comes clean(Filed: 21/02/2006)D B C Pierre's follow-up to his Man Booker prize-winning debut is inspired by his dismay at the state of the world. The outraged moralist talks to Jasper Rees. Very early in 2003, I went to the offices of Faber & Faber in Bloomsbury to meet, for this newspaper, a first-time novelist. At 41, he looked slightly long in the tooth to be fresh out of the traps, even a bit roughed up by life. It was his first ever interview. I remember asking him if he had any idea how good his book was. To be taken on by such reputable publishers after half a lifetime of epic underachievement was fairy-tale enough. But three years later, when we meet in his editor's office at the same publisher to talk about the follow-up, the story has moved on. The shelves behind him are bedecked with books called things like Vernon Dios Little, Vernonas Dievas Litlis, Jesus von Texas, and something in Cyrillic. "My favourite," says D B C Pierre, "is Vernon Bog Little." Bog... Defining anxiety...ba href=/panic disorder/a/b and generalized anxiety. Here's a little more information about a few common disorders: ba href=/panic disorder/a/b is characterized by panic attacks and sudden feelings of terror that strike repeatedly without warning. Symptoms include chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, feelings of unreality, fear of dying. It is often associated with agoraphobia - the fear of being in places or situations from which it might be difficult or embarrassing to escape, such as a room full of people or an elevator. About 1.7 percent - 2.4 million - of Americans between the ages of 18 and 54 experience ba href=/panic disorder/a/b in a given year. With about half of the people dealing with it, the problem surfaced before the age of 24. Women are twice as likely as men to experience it. Generalized anxiety disorder is a chronic, exaggerated worry about routine events and activities. Someone suffering from it anticipates the worst even though there is little reason to expect it. Physical symptoms include fatigue, trembling, muscle tension, headache, nausea, insomnia, hot flashes. About 2.8 percent - 4 million - Americans between the ages of 18 and 54 have generalized anxiety. Most often, it begins in childhood or adolescence, and it affects more women than men. Phobias are fear of things that pose little or no real danger. In extreme cases, the fear can become disabling.
