In trying to understand what someone with an anxiety disorder is going through, it's important to know that the feelings and sensations are intense and real, said Andy Hagler, the executive director of the Mental Health Association of Forsyth County. "They are not putting on," Hagler said. "It's not just a case of the jitters. It's very serious." For half of his life, McGee has been suffering from a debilitating mix of generalized anxiety, ba href=/panic disorder/a/b and agoraphobia, which is often associated with ba href=/panic disorder/a/b. In describing one attack, McGee said, "I felt like somebody had thrown gas on me. I was hot. I was shaky." In describing another experience, he said, "It's like having a top inside your head." Anxiety disorders are often complicated by depression, Hagler said. Anxiety is not depression, he said, but the effect that it can have on someone's life can be just as disruptive and can lead to depression. "It's not uncommon for people to have both," Hagler said. The good news about anxiety disorders is that, with treatment, significant improvement is possible. That's true, for instance, for 70 percent to 90 percent of people with ba href=/panic disorder/a/b, according to statistics from the Anxiety Disorders Association of America.
