Thieves strike at hospital garden

...ba href=/schizophrenia/a/b, which affect the sufferers lives.

According to psychiatric nurse Sue Ward, growing vegetables helps patients use every-day skills, enjoy the outdoors and reintegrate into society.

Story continues ADVERTISEMENT She said: "It offers people hope for the future by allowing them to do things that the rest of the general public do.

"Although we don't use it much in the winter, in the summer we might go down there as often as two or three times a week, have a cup of tea and do some gardening." Currently staff at the hospital have helped out by lending tools of their own, so work in the allotment can continue during a vital time of the gardening year.

But with resources limited, the hospital has put out a plea to members of the public thinking of investing in new equipment for the summer months to donate their old tools.

Psychiatric nurse Eddie Smith added: "People just fail to appreciate that these therapeutic sessions are very beneficial to our patients." Mr Smith asked for people with spare gloves, spades, forks, seeds, secateurs, watering cans or a petrol mower top contact them on 01926 313126.
