I used to think he needed to be in jail for the attempted murder of Malcolm High School students (I grew up in Malcolm) Now however, I think the Regional center is an appropriate place for him if he TRULY has ba href=/schizophrenia/a/b.

It is a serious disease that affects many people.

At least if he is at the Regional Center he will be getting help for his illness.

San Jacinto chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill after her mother, in center portrait, committed suicide when Brenda was 14.

Even after her mother committed suicide when Scott was 14, no one mentioned the brain disorders.

"It's like a badge of dishonor or mark or shame.

People don't understand," says Scott, a Hemet resident, who has since learned more about brain disorders and provides support for others who encounter such illnesses.

One way was by becoming a member of the Mt.

San Jacinto chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.

The local chapter aims to dispel the myths behind mental illnesses through awareness.

On Thursday, it will host a screening of "Out of the Shadow," a documentary about one women's experience with ba href=/schizophrenia/a/b and how it affected her family.

A panel discussion will follow.

To squelch mental illness stigmas, people should become more aware about the frustration and other experiences families go through, says Scott, a Riverside County Department of Mental Health family advocate.

About 20 percent of the population has some sort of mental illness during their lifetime, according to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill.

He attributes that to faculty and staff reaching out to students who seem stressed or down.At peak times, toward the end of semesters, the University of Northern Iowa's counseling center is at or slightly above capacity, said Dave Towle, a psychologist and director of the center.

His office sees 500 students a year, about 10 percent of the student population.To help more students, Natvig sees some clients every three weeks instead of every two, a measure to help alleviate the wait for some students seeking counseling.The waiting list for psychiatric appointments at the University of Iowa has doubled, now sitting at four to six weeks, said Natvig.

He noted that students who can't safely wait are squeezed in sooner.
