- - Today the court heard that Gleeson has seven previous convictions and is a chronic schizophrenic who needs on-going treatment at a very high level.

Gleeson did not fall into the legal definition of insanity and because of this and a bed shortage at the Central Mental Hospital he is not guaranteed a transfer there if given a custodial sentence.

Judge Michael White said he would adjourn sentencing to next Thursday to hear directly from the director of the Central Hospital on what facilities can be provided for Gleeson.

He reinstated the lawyers after a toothache sidelined him, but not before he told jurors that he was present at the fatal shooting and knew what happened, and wept.

Nevertheless, that gave him a window to show jurors the defendant as a person, different from the meandering loser prosecutors were portraying.

"You can't let the guy go without standby counsel.

It would be a ripe area for appeal.

"There probably would be nothing wrong with the judge appointing standby counsel.

The judge could inquire if someone wants to," said University of Baltimore law pr...
