Hospitalized Schizophrenics Have Medical, Surgical Complications...ba href=/schizophrenia/a/b hospitalized for medical or surgical care
unrelated to their mental disorder shows they are at least
twice as likely as similar patients without ba href=/schizophrenia/a/b to
suffer dangerous and expensive adverse events. The adverse events are associated with poor outcomes, including death. The researchers concluded that decreased quality of care given to patients with ba href=/schizophrenia/a/b might put them at higher risk for serious infections and other complications. A report on the findings appears in the March issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry. "The results of our study suggest that having ba href=/schizophrenia/a/b may be a previously unrecognized or underappreciated contributor to higher likelihood of complications and death for patients admitted to a medical or surgical hospital service," said Gail L. Daumit, an assistant professor of medicine at the School of Medicine and first author of the report. The primary diagnoses in these cases were conditions that required immediate medical or surgical care. The Johns Hopkins team, composed of investigators from the schools of Medicine and Public Health, evaluated patients discharged from Maryland acute care hospitals following medical or surgical treatment in 2001 and 2002. The patients included 1,746 who had ba href=/schizophrenia/a/b and 732,210 who did not. Using a set of standard patient safety indicators, or PSIs, developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the team found that patients with ba href=/schizophrenia/a/b were two-and-one-hal... Forsaken, patient goes berserk...ba href=/schizophrenia/a/b patient turned violent around 11 pm when a nurse, Bhabani Roy, tried to inject a medicine for the non-existent cramps. Hanif jumped out of bed and ran after Roy, who somehow reached a police camp on the hospital premises. “One of the two home-guards who went to restrain Hanif fled when he turned towards them. The other, Bud- dhadeb Mondal, slipped and fell. Hanif sat on him and beat him up,” a police officer said. Then he snatched a slim iron rod — used for setting up mosquito nets — and started threatening the 15 male patients in the ward. The guard who had fled informed the Lalgola police station, a kilometre away, and a team of seven personnel arrived around midnight. Hanif hit a constable with the rod. When Halim, his elder brother who had admitted him there, tried to pacify him, he was hit and left with a gash in the leg. By this time, there was complete chaos in the hospital. “As Hanif ran around the beds, some of the male patients joined the police in the chase. One of them took a small iron chair and hit him on the head. Hanif collapsed on the floor,” a police officer said. Relatives of patients demonstrated in front of the hospital — about 250 km from Calcutta — today, asking why a mental patient was lodged with others. An injured Hanif was shifted to Behrampore General Hospital. District health officials said Halim, a resident of neighbouring Rajanagar village, had suppressed from the hos-pital that his brother sometimes turned violent. But we also offer agribusiness incentives and huge infrastructure projects, which have a big environmental impact." Marcelo Furtado, the director of Brazil Greenpeace campaigns, said that the FBOMs report represents a response to the last Conference of the Parties to the Climate Convention, which determined March 31 as the date for countries to express themselves on how they see the relationship between forest preservation governance and climatic balance. "Since Brazil has still not presented its official report, which should occur in the next week, we hope that our report can help make the formulation of the country's report more participatory." The FBOMs, which include approximately 500 organizations and civil society movements, was created in 1990. The COP is the deliberative body of the CDB. It meets every two years. The meeting in Curitiba is being attended by 3,600 representatives of 173 countries. In all, the CDB has 187 signatory nations, in addition to the European Union.
