Only 40 winks stinks Sleep deprivation hampers youths' growth ......ba href=/sleep/a/by while behind the wheel and, on a weekly basis, 15 percent of them barely can keep their eyes open while driving, according to a national survey released today. "That's really a double whammy," said Russell Rosenberg, director of the Northside Hospital ba href=/sleep/a/b Medicine Institute in Atlanta and a spokesman for the National ba href=/sleep/a/b Foundation, "because these young drivers, who aren't all that experienced to begin with, if you give them ba href=/sleep/a/b deprivation, their reaction times are slowed, and they are at a much greater risk for motor- vehicle accidents." advertisement The foundation's 2006 "ba href=/sleep/a/b in America" poll, a first-of-its-kind study involving about 1,600 youths ages 11-17 and their caregivers, also reports students are nodding off in class, snoozing during homework and missing school as never before. "And parents have no idea to the degree of that deprivation, with all the 24/7 things kids can do." For example, although 90 percent of parents think their kids are getting enough ba href=/sleep/a/b at least a few nights a week, 56 percent of students know they're not. And the quality of their rest isn't great, either: Only four in 10 students regularly get a good night's ba href=/sleep/a/b. This fatigue gets only worse as children move from middle school to high school: Sixth-graders ba href=/sleep/a/b just more than eight hours on school nights, a number that dips ...
